My cat's anal gland abscess burst. Can it heal without a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

Hey there. My cat is a 15 year old tabby and yesterday she had, what I think was an anal gland abscess rupture on its own, I had no idea it was there. She's also slightly diabetic. I have been cleaning out the would with Epsom salt water and just put antibiotic cream on with the cone so she doesn't lick. Do you think this sort of thing can heal on its own or will I have to bring her in. Lots of puss and blood has come out.

It will most likely heal with the treatment you are providing. Occasionally oral antibiotics are needed to get it to completely heal. Now, that being said, that is quite a bit of blood for just an anal gland rupture so I would be a bit concerned. If you continue treating it, and if after about 5-7 days there is not much improvement, then you should get her to a vet for an exam.
