Can my senior dog with bladder stones eat homemade food post-surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 39 lbs

Hello. This is to rocko Luigi. He is an 11 year old jug. He has had homemade food for 3 years and has maintained his weight for the last 4 years or so. He was recently diagnosed with a bladder stone and will have surgery tomorrow. They gave him vet food and hates it. So I have decided after a ridiculous amount of research, that vet food has more crap in it than all natural homemade food. Rice, chicken and fresh veges. He's too old to have this anxiety of change. Thoughts?

I would recommend that you ask for a referral to a veterinary nutritionist. There are several that are available for email consults and they can help you make a homemade recipe that will have the recommended changes based on the type of stones that Rocko makes (there are two main types of bladder stones, and dietary recommendations will change based on the type).
