My dog ate pecans and is lethargic. Should I worry about pancreatitis?

Charlie ate pecans yesterday I don’t know how many but he got into the entire bag and must have had quite a bit. He’s low on energy this morning and doesn’t want to eat anything except a piece of cheese. What should I go?

Hello. There is nothing dangerous or toxic about pecans by themselves, but the nuts do contain a lot of fats & oils. This could lead to vomiting & diarrhea, & possibly pancreatitis. I would definitely avoid any fatty foods for the next few days & this includes cheese & processed meats. If Charlie feels like eating, only offer him cooked chicken ( no skin or fat ) & cooked whole grain white rice ( not Minute Rice ). He can receive small meals of 75% rice & 25% chicken ( can use jarred chicken baby food, too ) until you are sure there is no vomiting or diarrhea. If he continues to act unwell over the next 36-48 hours, then please see your vet to rule out an inflammatory episode of pancreatitis. Hope all is well & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Feeding dogs pecans can cause gastric intestinal upset or an obstruction. This is usually occurring with small breed dogs and large quantity ingested. The signs you described could be already compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver). Pancreatitis in these cases is a major concern. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. This can make them sick. Because they have a high fat content, they can cause pancreatitis. I'd keep an eye on your dogs for now. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, a hunched up appearance, lethargy, or a loss of appetite, have them seen by a vet. Do not let them have anymore. If you don't see any of these signs over the next 24 hours, they should be fine. I hope this helps!
