My dog is on Prednisone. What's a safe weaning schedule and dosage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

We have a surrendered 65lb dog who was on Prednisone 10mg twice a day for 30 days for inflamed ears and skin. We had a volunteer vet check her out and she said she is great and can be weaned off. She never gave us the wean off process and she is now on vacation and we can’t contact her. Can someone tell me the safest weaning schedule with dosages? Thank you.

Hello. After 30 days on prednisone, I would take your time weaning your dog. Cut the dose by 50% every 2 weeks, so you can do 10 mg once a day for 2 weeks, then 5 mg once a day for 2 weeks finishing with 5 mg every other day for 2 weeks ( 7 doses ). Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
