My puppy ate a tampon. What should I do if my vet is unavailable?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 11 days old | 12 lbs

My Jack Chi puppy (4 months old) ate an old used tampon. He consumed the tampon at around 9 am and it is currently 4 pm. He hasn’t shown any signs of illness yet. My local vet is out of town and am not sure what to do

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It may be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian. They could attempt to remove it via endoscopy. Otherwise, monitor him closely for signs of a gastrointestinal obstruction such as vomiting, nausea and/or abdominal pain. If those are seen, have him evaluated then as he may need surgery. Hopefully he is fine. Best of luck!
