My dog's surgery stitches keep opening. Is it infected? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 8 months and 6 days old

My dog had a surgery last Saturday. I have bandaged his feets to prevent scratching and put on ecollar regularly but his stitches came out and he did stichting again for the third time. Before when the stitches got open,i could see his intestines but this time though it's open his intestines couldn't be seen. Theres only plain flesh. What should I do. Please tell me. The doctor said that if his stitches came out again then there is nothing they could do.

That looks infected which is why the stitches are coming out. He needs to be taking oral antibiotics. You need to keep the area clean. It will heal without the stitches holding as long as it is just the skin that is open and not the underlying tissue. So, call your vet and get them to dispense you some oral antibiotics.
