My spayed dog has a lump with a suture sticking out. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 54 lbs

I had my dog spayed and her sutures were removed a month ago. She has had a lump with a suture sticking out of it since they were removed. She will not let you touch her stomachshe growls and nips at you. She constantly licks the lump with the suture. Today I asked her to be seen by the vet and he said it was fine and to simply just not touch her belly if it bothers her. He was not bothered at all even when she growled and tried to bite him for touching it. Should I be not as concerned like him?

Pictures would be helpful but if the suture is poking clearly through the skin it may be causing some aggravation and sedation to remove it could be considered - this would need to be cut down through the skin to expose it causing additional trauma and may not resolve her reluctance to have the area handled. If there is no redness, pus or swelling around the area then watchful monitoring may indeed be the best option
