My senior dog has a growing pink stomach bump. Could it be cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | unspayed | 20 lbs

My dog is 16 years old. Over the last year, she has developed a pink bump that has only gotten larger, on her stomach. My questions are, is this cancerous? Does she need surgery or will a shot suffice? I have done a little research and have learned that this is common. However, I would like an experts opinion before taking further action. Thank you.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. Given the location, a mammary tumor is most likely. Half of those tumors are benign and half are malignant. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Surgery would be recommended if there is no evidence of cancer spread. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
