Why is my kitten always sneezing with watery eyes and low energy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 19 days old

Penelope is roughly 6 months old. She’s had a cold for a while now. She’s always sneezing, watery nose discharge, and her eyes water up every once in a while. When she was born she was the only one I had troubles with keeping her eyes from getting stuck shut from eye boogies. And she’s the most lovable cat I have. She never leaves my side. As well as she eats, but not as much as my other cats. And I have four other cats. And she sleeps a lot. And doesn’t play that often.

What a cutie! It sounds like she might be suffering from a chronic viral infection, which some cats are prone to. It can be an active infection, or there can be structural changes in the nose from previous infection that cause frequent colds and runny noses. L-lysine treats help some cats with this issue. Otherwise, a vet appointment whenever it's going on for more than 3-4 days or if she has a decreased appetite or is squinting her eyes.
