What to do about my female budgie's egg laying and egg binding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 9 days old

Hello. As a bird owner, I have a few questions. I have owned budgies before, but only males, this is my first female and I would like some advice about egg laying/binding. Is there any way to stop my pet budgie from laying eggs, or is there a certain way to help her to lay eggs such as a nest or nest box? Is it bad to stop them from laying eggs? At what age will she start to lay eggs/Do all female budgie lay eggs? And is it bad if I notice that she doesn't start to lay any eggs? Thanks.

That's a lot of questions! If you have more, it's always a good idea to set up a consultation with one of our experts so that they can go over every question in better detail with you. A good way to prevent eggbinding is by making sure your budgie is on a balanced diet with enough calcium. Some people may choose to supplement with eggfood or a cuttlebone in addition to a balanced diet, especially if your budgie is actively laying. If you provide nest material, she may be encouraged to lay in there so you can watch the eggs. Laying depends on if she feels like laying eggs, if there is a male around mating with her, or if she is in season to lay eggs, and some budgies may not lay if they live alone or don't have access to a nest. It is usually pretty obvious if a budgie is laying eggs as you'll see the eggs, or may see her sitting on something for long periods of time without moving. If the eggs are not fertile or you don't want babies, you can simply remove the eggs. Most budgies are sexually mature around 7-12 months of age.
