Why is my 4-week-old puppy constipated and what should I feed him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 3 days old | 28 lbs

I have a 4 wk old puppy & im concerned about the consistency of his stool & how it should look. I mix wet puppy food with a puppy milk replacer once in the morning and once at night ,& throughout the day I feed him just the puppy food. I don’t bottle feed him & I don’t turn the food into a cereal like consistency ,& he eats all of it. Also ,when he’s pooping ,it looks as if he’s constipated & it’s worrying me . He poops at least 4/5 times a day but he won’t poop on a pad he peeded on already.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would try to phase out the formula and just feed him the puppy food. Do canned food for 1 week, then canned mixed with dry for 1 week, then dry food that you can wet with water if needed thereafter. Formula can really affect the stool, either diarrhea or constipation. If doing that doesn't improve the stool then I would change brands of puppy food. Purina is a great brand but not all dogs digest foods the same. be sure you are deworming him and have him set up around 7-8 weeks for his first vaccines. I hope this helps!
