My old dog scratches ears and cries. Is it ear mites or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Irish Red and White Setter | Male | neutered | 15 years and 4 months old | 60 lbs

Hi. I have a very old red setter (Irish setter). He is 16 this year. He recently has gone very deaf. I noticed that he scratches his ears alot and when he does this he starts crying. I think he might have ear mights but Im not fully sure. Is this diagnoses easily identifiable or could it be a number of different ailments? Is the diagnoses treatable? Thanks

Ear mites or ear infection (bacterial or yeast) can easily be diagnosed by your veterinarian. What is needed is an exam followed by an exam of a swab taken from the ears. Your vet can then dispense the appropriate medication. It can take 7-14 days to resolve either type of infection.
