My senior dog with cancer has yellow diarrhea. Is she dying?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | unspayed | 9 years and 7 months old | 11 lbs

My 9 yr old JR has mammary cancer and she has developed diaorrhea over the past 24 hours. Bright yellow. She’s eating and drinking normally for her and is still quite alert (see bouncy and barky!). Should I be worried this is near the end?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! No! I do not think that Daisy is near the end! Diarrhea can happen for many reasons! Possible causes are: less likely intestinal parasites due to her age, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, toxin ingestion, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to new food/table food/treat, pancreatitis. Sometimes we never know why dogs develop diarrhea. If the diarrhea is severe fast her for 12-24 hours to rest the intestinal tract. Then resume feeding with a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until normal stools. You can also add in a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. If you don't start to see improvement in a few days make an appointment with your Vet for medications. I hope this helps!
