What's the best age to vaccinate and microchip my new kitten?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 month and 18 days old | 11 lbs

Can kittens be vaccinated before the age of 8 weeks, my kitten was born on Valentine’s Day and I was wondering if kittens can be vaccinated before the age of 8 weeks or do I wait longer, he is an indoor kitten but I was wondering if I get him chipped too or if it’s too early, and he’s a pretty fat kitten so I’m sure he’s close to 2 pounds

I generally recommend starting the vaccination series at eight weeks, although if the kitten was taken off the mother early then vaccinating at six weeks or older is fine. Usually I do the microchip at the second or third vaccination or at neutering when they are bigger. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Artemis.
