Why is my dog throwing up digested food at night or when alone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 80 lbs

My dog has been throwing up at 3 am for the last couple nights. I looked up bilious vomiting syndrome but there’s no bile in his vomit that I can see, only fully digested food. He’s a 1.5 year old chocolate lab and has had the same diet his whole life. He gets about a scoop and a half of food around 5 am and 5 pm. We also leave him in a kennel outside while we’re at work and keep coming home to vomit in his kennel. But when we’re home he doesn’t vomit. Any thoughts on what may be causing this?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bozey! Allergies to foods can start at any age and even if they have been on the food their entire lives. If he isn't vomiting bile then it isn't bilious vomiting syndrome. Causes of vomiting in a young lab are: foreign body (he ate something that is stuck and needs surgery to remove), intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, food allergy or intolerance, new food/treat/table food or dietary indiscretion (ate something gross). I would start a bland diet for a few days, feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day as small frequent meals of boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with rice. Try to feed it for 5-7 days. If the vomiting stops then gradually add back in his old food over several days. If he continues to vomit on the bland diet he needs to be seen by your Vet for an exam and possibly belly X-rays. I hope this helps and I wish Bozey a speedy recovery!
