My puppy ate poop and threw up. What to do if she seems fine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 3 days old | 4.7 lbs

After coming home, we noticed our puppy ate some of her poop from her play area she was left in while we were gone. Whe bathed her and moments later she threw up brown liquid vomit that smells like poop with actual poop chunks. What do we do? She seems totally fine. But she ate poop and then vomited it.

I would not be too worried just yet. It's really gross, but good that she threw it up. She may vomit a couple of times, but as long as she's otherwise acting normal, she should be fine. I would only worry if she starts vomiting uncontrollably throughout the day/night. It's best to give her stomach a rest for the next few hours. If you feed her too soon, then she may vomit more. It's best to wait about 4-6 hours before feeding her again and start by feeding her half the usual amount. If she keeps the food down, then you can feed her the rest two hours later. Make sure she has plenty of fresh, clean water available the entire time.
