Why is my cat losing fur on her legs, has wounds, and drinks a lot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 23 days old | 6.6 lbs

I have a 1-year-old female cat who is missing big fur spots on the back of her legs. Two months ago she had her first litter of one kitten and soon after we moved apartments. After moving I noticed that she was missing a big patch of fur on the back of her leg and recently the same had happened to her other leg. At some times there are fresh wounds in that area as well. She has been drinking a lot more water and her appetite decreased (for wet food), she is also way more vocal. What could it be?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. What you are describing could be a skin infection such as ringworm or a bacterial skin infection. I would recommend having this examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. The wounds that have shown up in that area could be from her scratching at the area if it is uncomfortable. She may need antifungal / antibacterial medications both oral and topical. Please let me now if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
