My puppy has a changing lump above eye. Is it a mast cell tumor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Female | spayed

My dog Sadie has a large lump above her eye near her head and I think it’s a mast cell tumor. It has gotten larger and smaller almost daily over the last week or so and she has recently started scratching it (and helps when she does so). She’s a golden lab and she’s around 7 months old.

Hi there. The good news is, a mast cell tumor would be very unusual in a puppy this age. So it's likely that this bump is something else, such as a histiocytoma - these are benign growths that are common in your large breed dogs, especially on the head. But to be safe, I would recommend taking her to the vet to have the bump checked. If your veterinarian has any concerns after examining it, he/she can do a simple test called a fine needle aspirate to find out for sure what it is and whether or not it needs to be removed.
