My Chihuahua's eye is goopy, crusty, and won't open. Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 4 lbs

So my Chihuahua has problems with dry eye especially this time a year but I notice today that it was just itchy and dry there ways goop in her eye... slimey and I have never seen that before... at one point she fell a sleep and when she woke up her eye wouldn't open I have to take a warm rag to pat and kinda wipe this crustiness off so her eye would open... could this be allergies or an eye cold? should I take her to the Vet?

Poor Gable! Without being able to examine her eye in person or see a photo, it’s hat to say what might be wrong. She may have an eye infection or an injury to the eye such as a scratch or corneal ulcer, or her dry eye may be getting worse and require additional treatment. If there’s enough drainage that she couldn’t open her eye until you cleaned it, this is definitely not normal and warrants a vet visit as soon as possible.
