My senior dog has a bleeding hole near his anus. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

Rusty is 17 years old. He has a hole on the left side of his rectum that is oozing blood and mucus. At first I thought it was an impacted anal glad but it's not. He's not a candidate for surgery. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm surprised that this is not an anal gland abscess. It's possible that it is a tumor that has ruptured or an abscess not associated with the gland. If you have not had Rusty examined by your vet I'd recommend that as the first step to determine what this might be. If you have already seen the vet I would recommend following up with them regarding medical management options - it's possible that antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and warm compresses could help.
