My cat has a hard lump behind ear. What to do before vet opens?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 12 days old | 1.6 lbs

My cat has what seems to be a wound the size of a chickpea behind his ear. I've seen him meow loudly when scratching it lately. Just noticed the wound few minutes ago. The blood is dry. I tried touching it and it felt rounded and hard (like a coin). It's night time here. What can i do for him before the vet opens? Thank you

If you have an appropriately-sized e-collar, you can use that to protect the skin. Alternatively, you can put socks on the back feet to prevent the nails scratching the skin (but cats don't really like them and find ways to get out!). I would not recommend any topical treatments at this time since we don't know the cause of the lump or the scratching, and you don't want to interfere with the Doctor's exam or diagnostics tomorrow.
