Puppy parvo shot while nursing: Was it effective? When's next dose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 17 days old | 3 lbs

There is Parvo in the ground where I live. I gave them their 5 in 1 shot on the 28th of March. I had to take one to the vet 3 days ago and she told me that I should have waited, because the shot won't take as long as they are still nursing. Their mom is weaning them. They try too nurse but the mom gets up and walk away, sometimes they might nurse around 5 mins. But they are on solid food also. So I'm wondering if I did wrong by giving their shots? & When do they need shots again?

Hello, and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It’s great that you’re being conscientious of the risk of parvovirus! Parvo can stay in the environment for years, so it’s definitely warranted to be careful. The recommended schedule for the distemper/parvo vaccine is to give at 8, 12, and 16 weeks, and that’s typically what the vaccine is labeled for. Your vet is right that your pups may not have been ready to respond to the vaccine - but you didn’t do any harm. Essentially, the worst thing it can do is nothing, as their bodies won’t be ready to generate the immune response we want from the vaccine. I recommend repeating the vaccine 3 weeks after the previous dose, and continue every 3-4 weeks until the last puppy booster is given at or beyond 16 weeks of age. Hope this helps!
