Why is my puppy itching, biting his rear, and whining constantly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 9 days old | 4 lbs

My puppy is 9 weeks old.All of a sudden this evening he has started itchy like crazy. His back legs biting them. It’s almost like he is trying to get to his anus but can’t quite reach. He seems to whine a little as well. It’s quite distressing to watch. I bathed him in Epsom salts and eucalyptus oil as recommend by wags. I then put coconut oil on his skin. I also gave a recommended amount of Benadryl. What could be the cause of this? He can’t seem to settle.

Please do not bath him in Epsom salt or Eucalyptus oil anymore, don't put coconut oil on him anymore either, these recommendations are completely useless and can actually make things much worse. This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Prince regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.
