My cat has new thin fur patches. Should I see a vet or treat at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 10 months old

Jinx is allergic to fleas had lost fur on her behind. We have been treating and she is flea free for the last few months. The hair seemed to slowly be growing back but I noticed new thin patches of fur on her sides. She has the same food, poops look normal, no skin rash, a couple sores from playing with the other cats on her neck but not where the fur is thinning, she is still as lovable and as playful as always. Should I take her to the vet or is there something I can do at home?

I would recommend taking her to the vet - it sounds like this new hair loss could be unrelated to the fleas. It's possible that Jinx also has developed an allergy or that she has another type of external parasite. In some rare cases cats will overgroom as a compulsive behavior as well.
