Why does my cat dig and sit in the litter box but not pee or poop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 5 years and 5 months old

Recently my cat has been getting in the litter box, digging in it and then sitting in it for like a minute at random points during the day (not too often, but at least once a day). After digging, she doesn’t poop or pee, she just sits, stares at me for a minute then leaves. What could it mean?

Hello. It might not be anything, but chances are, she has a bit of a lower urinary tract infection, or possibly some cystitis. Anything like this can cause irritation & the urge to urinate. Sometimes these episodes require an antibiotic, sometimes a change to a urinary specific diet. Talk to your vet next week & see what the next best action is, but more than likely, your vet will want to check her for a UTI. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
