Cat refusing kidney diet on Flagyl after diarrhea. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 19 years and 1 month old | 9.5 lbs

Hi after some months I finally got tony to eat his kidney diet,as his values are in the hi normal range. A week ago he had a bout of diarrhea & lack of appetite for a day so my vet gave me liquid flagyl. I’m on day 6 of 7 of the flagyl & tony is now refusing two different types of kidney food so I let him eat a non kidney food today b/c he of course needs to eat. I fear all our work in transitioning him to kidney food is lost. Normal to not want his normal diet while on flagyl maybe? thx

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tony. I suspect his appetite has changed more due to his recent gastrointestinal upset than to the antibiotics. Once he has finished the medication, wait a few days and try to mix in the kidney diet again. Hopefully he will transition back over to it without a struggle. I hope this information helps!
