My 9-month-old puppy has loose stools. What food should I switch to?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a 9 month old Shih-tszu/ multipoo mix puppy, he has loose stool a lot. We are currently feeding him Whole Hearted chicken and pea puppy food but I think that this particular food may not be right for him. Do you have a better recommendation to try?

I would switch him to plain boiled boneless, skinless chicken and white rice for a little while to see if this settles his tummy. If it improves, I would SLOWLY start to transition him to a new puppy food. I like science diet and royal canin. These are diets that have been around for a long time with the proper studies to back them up. I would also put him on a probiotic like purina fortiflora or proviable to see if this helps. If he is continuing to have loose stools, I would have your vet take a look at him to rule out parasites including giardia. Your vet will be able to do additional diagnostics if needed as well. They will be able to get him on the proper treatment to help him feel better as soon as possible. I hope this helps!
