My rescue puppy's mom was malnourished. What food should I feed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Black and Tan Coonhound | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 12 days old | 15 lbs

I have a two month old Black and Tan coonhound that I adopted from a rescue. They said when they rescued the mother she was very emancipated and she delivered the puppies a couple days later. Given the lack of medical care and nutrition during gestation what should I be concerned about? I have him on Orijen puppy food it’s not large breed specific but it’s no grain and high fat. Should I be giving him any supplements? I was concerned about bone development but have read that yo much calcium

I would just switch him to a large breed puppy food to help add more calcium and phosphorus. During pregnancy, the body naturally give all the nutrients to the puppies first so he will likely be fine. Also you may want to read up on the latest release/warning about grain free diets causing heart disease. It isn’t completely understood yet but I just want everyone to be aware and use their best judgement. Dogs are fine to have grains unless they have severe skin allergies. I hope this helps. https://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/CVMUpdates/ucm613305.htm
