Why is my dog suddenly pooping black, hard stool but seems fine?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 51 lbs

What could be the reason my dog is pooping black poop the poop is hard but is just black. She is drinking normally and eating normally . She has mites but the docter prescribed her some medication to take and she does . She just started pooping black today though what could it be?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Usually black stools represent signs of bleeding into the stomach or small intestine as the blood usually turns black when it is digested. This could potentially be due to parasites, a gastrointestinal ulcer, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Ella evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Treatment is usually based on what is actually causing it. However, at the very least, gastrointestinal protectants and anti-acid such as omeprazole and sucralfate are likely going to be useful.
