My 10-year-old dog won't eat or drink for 24 hours. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 1 month old | 14 lbs

My 10 year old dog is just laying on the bed, has not eaten anything or drank any water for about 24 hours. What do you think might be wrong?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I am concerned that he is likely becoming dehydrated. I recommend that you have Slugger evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
