Why is my 9-year-old cat suddenly pooping indoors after years outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 years old | 6 lbs

why would a healthy (as far as I know) cat about 9 years old defecate in the house after years of going outside willingly.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be due to a change in the environment causing this change. Sometimes, this may be due to a gastrointestinal condition such as parasites which can be causing him to defecate more frequently being less able to hold it to go outside. If this continues to happen, it would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Best of luck!
