My dog got a scratch. How to treat a dog wound at home safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 10 months old | 80 lbs

Hi, my dog slipped on the pavement and scratched himself while running. I would like to know if I can apply these that I already had at home or what I can get to treat it, thank you

Ouch, poor Neuer! I wouldn't use any of those, he will just lick it off and they contain ingredients that are not safe for dogs to ingest. I would gently clean his wounds with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
