Why is my cat coughing with mucus, not a hairball? Is it serious?

My 2 yr old cat has started what looks like he's gonna throw up a hairball, but it sounds like he's coughing with mucus. Or like he's trying to clear his throat. He still eats and plays the same. Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | 7 lbs
