My dog has diarrhea after eating trash. What can I give him?

My Lhasa Apso (who’s 11 years old) has had diarrhea off and on for 3 days. He’s gotten into the trash a couple of times so I think that’s the reason. There was nothing dangerous in there that I know of but he does have a sensitive tummy. He weighs 22lbs. What can I give him to help? He’s eating and drinking and not vomiting. It is definitely a good sign that he is eating and drinking well. Diarrhea is a common problem with dogs and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It doesn't appear to be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Chewy has any of the following, then he should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. You can help him get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/2 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available.
