Dog spayed: Is her incision normal? She's hiding and seems painful.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I just got my dog spayed yesterday (March 21). They gave her one pain medication when I went to pick her up and that’s it. She hid under the bed for the rest of the day and just wasn’t acting like herself. Does the stitches look normal or should I take her back to the vet? (It’s not oozing puss even though it might look like it in the picture)

Thank you for submitting your question. The incision appears a little red and swollen, but being so soon after surgery that is likely normal. If she is still hiding and not acting normally, then she may be painful. You may need to ask about more pain medicine for her. In the meantime, keep her from licking the incision. If the swelling increases or you notice discharge, she will need to be seen by her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!
