Dog still itchy on Apoquel. Is changing food the right solution?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shetland Sheepdog | Female | spayed | 8 years and 10 months old | 42 lbs

Our Sheltie has always had allergies. She is currently on apoquel. We try to give her food that is grain free. It seems it is worse lately...scratching, biting, and shaking her head. Is changing her food a good idea?

Changing her food is not likely to help as food allergies are much more rare than most people believe. if she does not suffer from soft stools or other gastrointestinal problems, food allergy is very low on the list of possible causes. If she is on Apoquel and still suffering from severe allergies i would recommend doing an allergy test, i see this as kind of a last resort as it is not always accurate but at this point i feel there is very little to lose.
