My dog has a bald spot on his head. When should I worry and see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 8 years old | 22 lbs

I just noticed a dime size patch of baldness on my 8 y.o. mini schnauzer's head. I've never seen this anywhere else on him before now. It doesn't seem to bother him, but should I take him to the vet?

Hurley’s bald spot could be due to many things including a bacterial infection, healed wound or less likely, a ringworm infection (which humans can get). Of course seeing his veterinarian will give you the answers the fastest so that’s always an option. If however the area is not raised, reddened, irritated, scabby or itchy, you could watch it over the next two weeks to see if it improves. If it shows any of the above listed signs, have it check out for sure. I would recommend just leaving it alone if it look like normal skin. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope this helps.
