Puppy peeing small amounts of dark yellow urine: Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 26 days old | 9 lbs

Hi, I just adopted a puppy and I've noticed that she pees in little quantities even though she drinks enough water. The color is dark yellow. Right now she's playful, eats normally and doesn't seems in pain, etc. What can this be?

I would monitor this for a while. Small puppies have small urinary bladders and therefore cannot hold a lot of urine yet. This may be quite normal. Dark yellow urine may mean her kidneys are good at concentrating urine, possibly that she is not drinking enough (she should drink at least 60ml/2.2lbs/24hrs). Sometimes puppies have a congenital liver disorder that can discolor the urine (usually brown or green). If she strains to urinate or tries to urinate very often with only a few droplets coming, she may have a urinary tract infection which would need to be seen and treated by a veterinarian. So, if you suspect she may have an infection or other condition, please take her to your veterinarian for an exam.
