My dog has a red tick bite. When should I worry and see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Female | 11 months and 26 days old | 48 lbs

I just found a tick on my labradoodle’s belly about 6” from her vulva and removed it. It looks to be a deer tick. I’m concerned about the redness around the bite. There does not seem to be swelling. The tick is plump as it was feeding. She was vaccinated with Vanguard cr at 15 weeks of age in April. . Should I take her in to see the vet? Not sure what they can do?

Tick bites can sometimes cause a local reaction and inflammation that can result in mild redness and swelling around the bite. If there is significant swelling or discharge from the bite you may want to have your vet take a look. You may also want to watch for signs of tick borne disease like lethargy, fever and joint pain over the next few months - the deer tick can carry diseases other than Lyme disease. It would also be a good idea to talk to your vet about a tick preventative.
