How to treat fleas and severe mats on an uncooperative senior cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 17 years and 8 months old | 8 lbs

I have an elderly, not well tabby 171/2 years. He stopped grooming himself, and his hair is long. It got matted really bad and we found fleas. He will not let us groom him at all. Did I mention he was a red tabby? He will not let a Vet. touch him or us. What do you suggest we do for the fleas that would be somewhat safe? To see a Vet. they would have to give him sleep sedation. We know His last visit cost us a $1000.00.

Fleas medications are typically given orally or topically, so you would need to handle Rusty into order to treat his fleas. I think the best thing to do is have him seen by a vet and be sedated. The matts will actually be painful to him, and they need to be shaved off. While he is sedated for grooming, the vet can give him a topical flea treatment. I'd take him into a vet tomorrow. Keep in mind as well that fleas live in the environment, not on the cat, so you need to treat your home as well as he is treated for fleas. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Best of luck, I hope this helps.
