My dog isn't eating and vomits yellow. What's wrong and what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog, he is a Shitzu, weighs around 15 pounds, 1 year and 6 months old. It's not eating as before, he leaves food for hours in his bowls, and sometimes vomits a yellow substance which I think is because he has not been eating so he has an empty stomach. I tried changing the food brand I was buying but he still does the same thing. He still a very active and happy dog. What would you suggest for me to do?

Throwing up can be caused by a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast your dog for 24 hours and then put the dog on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection or chronic pancreatitis going on.
