Puppy vomiting and not digesting food. Could it be acid reflux?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 41 lbs

I adopted an english bulldog boxer mix puppy last Thursday. He's been doing well, but he's not digesting the food I've been giving him well. He's been throwing it up and may have acid reflux as well. I didn't want to feed him beniful because I heard it causes dogs to itch, but we have a pug who's been eating that as well and my felt that it would be fine, but I bought a Walmart brand of food before I realized what it was and one I've been mixing the 2. He's 1 year old.

Beneful doesn't make dogs itch. Any dog food that they are allergic to can make a dog itch. Common allergens in dogs are chicken and beef. Grains are less likely to make an allergic dog itch. But food allergies are less common in young dogs as they are in older dogs. I would recommend that you have Beau examined by a vet. Other causes for vomiting include dietary intolerance or indiscretion, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, among others. The vet will do an exam and discuss the circumstances surrounding his vomiting. The vet may recommend blood work or x-rays depending on what they think may be going on.
