My old dog has black diarrhea, vomiting, and won't eat. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 14 years and 1 month old | 15 lbs

My dog has been throwing up and has had uncontrollable diarrhea that’s black. Sometimes I see blood but more times I don’t. She’s older and I’ve been really worried. What should I do? Won’t drink or eat anything but did eat a few treats

That sounds serious. I recommend to take Shelby into the veterinarian right away. Black stool can indicate bleeding in the upper GI system. There are many causes: parasites, liver disease, severe inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, cancer, or a severe GI ulcer. The doctor will need to run bloodwork and a fecal sample to look for parasites. There are also additional diagnostics that they may recommend. Medications are indicated and likely a bland diet. I hope this helps to point you in the right direction. Best of luck.
