Our adult cat jus tested positive for FCoV (blood test), after no exposure to another cat for a year. Last year, our new kitten died, after 2 weeks in our home. He seemed healthy, but was put down after uncontrollable seizures. Should we get this replacement kitten? Is there a better test to assess risk? If the virus came from the breeder’s home, could our adult cat develop FIP, with new exposure? We are sad to think we might not get the kitten, but don’t want heartache again. Thank you.

FIP is an extremely heartbreaking disease. Unfortunately, there is no test for it. The Coronavirus test can be positive and your cat may never have the virus mutate. I have also had cases where the Coronavirus test was negative but on necropsy the cat was positive for FIP. This tells me that the test is not 100%. There is always a risk for a cat to have the Coronavirus mutate. There is conflicting data about FIP being contagious. Some households can get really bad strains and I have seen if run through the house, while other households only have one cat get it. Is FIP contagious? No one truly knows the answer. My recommendation is throw everything out, Clean everything very well and then buy everything new. After that I would say you can get another kitten. Will the new kitten develop FIP? I have no way of saying. I am so sorry you had this occur. I wish you the best and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
