Why is my male cat suddenly lethargic, not eating or drinking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

my active male cat has suddenly turned very gloomy and i can clearly see that he's not feeling very well. there are not any obvious symptoms but he is barely moving from one place to another which is very odd considering how active he is. he's slowly eating but he didnt drink much today. i'm worried, i'm planning to go to the vet tomorrow asap but what do you think i should do to at least comfort my cat?

I am sorry to hear about your cat. I would make sure that he has been urinating normally because one worry we have with male cats is the possiblity of a urinary blockage. This can be a life threatening issue https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951735 and requires emergency care so if you don't think he has been peeing, he is going to the litterbox and straining/crying, or is uncomfortable if you press on his belly he needs to be seen right away. You can try syringe feeding him water or making a slurry of wet food and water put into a blender to encourage fluid intake/hydration. If he is weak, painful, or having difficulty breathing he should be seen as soon as possible.

Sorry to hear Benedict isn’t feeling well! Have you seen him in the litter box today? If he is straining to urinate, or if you aren’t sure if he has urinated today please take him to a vet this evening to make sure his bladder isn’t big and painful. A urethral blockage is a common problem in male cats that can be life threatening. If you are certain that he HAS urinated today and you haven’t seen any straining in the litter box, it’s ok to see how he feels in the morning as long as no other symptoms are present, and it’s only been one day that he hasn’t eaten. If he still seems “off” tomorrow, take him to the vet. I hope that is helpful for you! Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
