Dog's eye red, swollen, itchy. Is it conjunctivitis or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 35 lbs

Hello. Is this conjunctivitis? It's only on one eye and I think it's itchy for her because she keeps scratching it. It's really swollen now and her eye is really red. It's been three days. What can I do? I'm really worried.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Now that I am able to see inside of the eye, it is certainly evident that the eye itself is also affected. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. I highly recommend that you have Summer evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

It looks as Summer is suffering from a severe eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take her to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.
