My dog keeps throwing up after neutering. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 28 lbs

My dog got neutered on Thursday and is still having trouble holding down food and water. He will eat and throw up 5-6 hours later. He has always had a sensitive stomach, but worse now after anesthesia. I am giving him rice and ground turkey and not allowing him to drink water too fast. He is getting 20 mg of Pepcid daily. He was very lethargic until Saturday, but improved now. When can I expect his vomiting to stop ? His BM this morning was a small amount and liquid with a lot of gas.

Diarrhea and throwing up can be caused by a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Loki for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the vomiting or if he still appears ill or lethargic, you should take him to your vet for a recheck. This may all be stress related, but you never know, there could be a gastro-intestinal infection as well. It is better to feed chicken instead of turkey, as turkey contains tryptophan, which can make your dog sleepy and lethargic.
