My cat isn't peeing after perineal urethrostomy. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 8 months old | 14 lbs

My pet had a perineal urethostomy on thursday because of another case of a blocked bladder. We picked him up at 1pm yesterday from the vet and he still hasn't peed. I am just wondering if I should be concerned. He had peed a couple times at the vet (he was there for 2 nights and had an IV). He isn't distressed. He is just very sleepy(prob from the meds) and is even purring lots when petted. Is this considered an emergency

I would have a vet take a look at him first thing Monday morning if he still hasn’t urinated and you are sure he hasn’t peed anywhere else in the house outside of the litter box. If he isn’t eating, not drinking, straining, crying out, or acting abnormal in any way, then I would take him in to the emergency clinic sooner. After a PU surgery he should be able to pee although he may have excessive swelling preventing it. If he peed while at the vet then he should be able to pee. I hope this helps!

He should have peed by now. There may be excessive swelling. I strongly suggest you take him back to either the vet who did the surgery, if he has an emergency service, or to a PetER to examine the "artificial" opening and make sure it is patent.
