My dog ate a tampon. How long until it passes in their stool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 45 pound Springer spaniel ate used tampon 48 hours ago. Acting perfectly normal and eating drinking normally. How long does it take for these types of items to pass in their stool?

It depends how long it stays in the stomach, which can vary. However, generally I would expect it to pass within 3-4 days. If you notice any vomiting, inappetence, or lethargy, please take her to the vet for an X-ray. Tampons will swell some in the GI tract, and even more concerning is that the string can get hung up and end up "accordion" folding the intestines together. If your pup is active, happy, eating, and pooping normally, I'd watch him/her diligently for a couple of more days, but then you are very likely in the clear. Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
