My cat pees often, small amounts, no UTI. Why are symptoms back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

Hi, yesterday my cat started going to the box frequently and would only pee little amounts, so I thought it was a UTI. I took her to the vet this morning, she stayed with the vet until she peed. She peed a normal amount this time, and they tested her urine. They also did a physical exam on her bladder. No infection. We bring her home and tonight, she's exhibiting those same symptoms. I gave her Capstar before this all started. Could that have something to do with it? Thank you.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Capstar would not cause that. The urinary tract symptoms you describe could be due to a urinary tract infection, urinary stones, a tumor, feline lower urinary tract disease, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have her reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as things have not necessarily improved. Further diagnostics would include abdominal imaging and lab work. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a good night!

Poor Tip-si! It could be she is suffering from a medical condition causing this behavior such as a UTI or bladder stones. I would recommend taking your girl into your vet today for an exam. Your vet can do routine blood tests and a urinalysis to see if she does have a UTI or bladder stones. If she has a UTI, she will need antibiotics to treat it. Bladder stones may need to be removed surgically, or can be managed with diet. Give her vet a call to set up an appointment. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

That is good that you are not seeing any blood in her urine but the change in her urination habits still indicates there is a potential problem and I recommend to have Luna examined by the veterinarian today. Have her urine checked for any evidence of infection, crystals in the urine or other abnormality. Blood in the urine is always an indication of a problem but a lack of blood does not mean everything is fine or normal. Just like anything, catching a problem earlier usually results in a faster and better outcome. Have her examined today. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

Yes, it could be possible, what you are describing are the typical symptoms of inflammation or infection of the lower urinary tract. If possible, I would suggest to collect a urine sample at home (there is an easy tool to do it: so the vet can perform a full urine analysis. Cats can have stress related cystitis or an infection within the bladder. Anti-inflammatory, supplements and if there is an infection, antibiotics, might be necessary to resolve the symptoms. In addition, if the urine analysis there is evidence of crystals the died might be changed as well. I therefore recommend, a full health check for Jellybean at your veterinarian asap. Good luck and please post again on the forum if you would like further advices. I hope this answer was helpful.
